Porter Manufacturing was organized in 1976 and began manufacturing and selling agricultural and industrial spray equipment to farm equipment dealers across the United States. In 1979, the company developed a unique product in herbicide application; the Wedge-Wik rope applicator. During 1979 to 1982, approximately 5000 of these units were marketed through distributors in the U.S., Great Britain, Argentina, the Netherlands, and other countries.
In the summer of 1982, an abrupt halt came to the agricultural industry. Since company dependence was primarily agricultural, production ceased and the number of employees was reduced to a minimum. Although the next few years, 1983 to 1986, were low production years, the company generated enough business to sustain operations and survive the economic crunch.
In 1986, the company began obtaining Government contracts, primarily for ground support equipment and supplies solicited by the United States Department of Defense. As a result of acquiring these contracts, a formal Quality Control program was established to meet the requirements in MIL-I-45208. Subsequently, the company began development of an ISO 9000 quality system to further enhance product quality. To date, the company has produced a variety of equipment including trailer contained steam cleaners and lubricating equipment, rocket launchers, field laundry and kitchen units, and potable water tank trucks. Several of these products are highlighted on our projects page.
The company provides full manufacturing capabilities, including fabrication, machining, welding, painting, and assembly. Additionally, the company provides an active engineering staff that has designed and overseen production of a wide variety of products for both agricultural and industrial uses. The quality assurance department works closely with customer representatives in maintaining quality and excellence for all products.
Today, the company is a small business generally employing less than 20 employees, depending on workload. Additionally, the company utilizes other domestic small businesses to the fullest extent possible in procurement and subcontracting needs, consistent with maintaining excellence and efficiency for all products.
